Our senses are so perceptive, adjusting to and absorbing the wonderful world around us. We navigate our every move by noticing the nuances, but we also take for granted just how much our senses guide us and can give us energy and elation.

While every sense has its place in our everyday doings and happenings, the powers of scent and sound are especially interesting. These two senses play a role in our happiness and well-being, so taking the extra effort to elevate their qualities can improve our lives.

Before brushing this off as some sort of mystical mystery, know that being skeptical is smart. It gets you thinking, and that’s an important first impression. I never gave much thought into the powers of scent and sound, but the more I embraced the idea, the more I realized how impressive these senses truly are. They can change our moods and change our minds.

If you need a little more positivity in your life, (and who doesn’t), get down to the basics and you’ll be better for it. Scent and sound are dynamic and compelling, especially when you take in all that’s beautiful.

Scent – Stimulating And Seductive

Deep breathing is calming and centering. You can focus on your feelings and tune into what’s in your heart and soul. Add in the bountiful scents around us, and you’ll connect with what’s nearby, giving you a sense of purpose and presence.

Scents that are mild relax us – think lavender and lemongrass. Even the delicious smell of a newborn baby makes us feel joyful and full of possibility. Stronger scents wake us up and invigorate us. Peppermint and freshly brewed coffee appeal to our need for liveliness and inspiration. I’m also a fan of incense and White Sage is my favorite. It is known for its ability to purify the air, boost mood, and calm stress.

Taking time to “smell the roses” may be a common cliché, but it has so much potential. Seduce your senses with scent, close your eyes, and transport yourself to a place of peace, pleasure, comfort, and contentment.

Sound –  Awaken And Arouse

Most of our days are flooded with sound. From the early morning ring of the alarm clock to the fierce thunderstorm at midnight. We hear babies crying, music blasting, and honking horns. TVs play in the background, phone conversations shout out on speaker mode, and lawn mowers roar in the front yard.

It’s hard to find peace and quiet, yet these sounds make our lives feel full and fast-paced. We may seek silence, but the noise can be a nice way for us to join a common community and cultivate belonging.

Tuning out the chaos is near impossible, so take it all in and find the joy in the hustle and bustle. When you realize this buzz is part of being, it sounds much more musical. When you do have those less turbulent times, listen to what makes you happy – perhaps a favorite song, the sound of your grandmother’s voice, or wind chimes outside your window. Perhaps you get a kick out of a motorcycle whizzing by or the kids playing in the swimming pool. Notice the pitches and playfulness. Even a commotion can be cathartic. It’s all about how you process and perceive.

Scent and sound – uplifting and enjoyable. Personal and powerful.
