4 Proven Practices to Give You a Perky Butt

As we get older, it seems body parts start to change location a bit. What once was tight and toned is now sagging down into another zip code. I say with no shame that my perky butt was once one of my best aspects (of course, my brain and my personality are up there as well ). However, I noticed a few years back that my bum was sort of melting down into the top of my legs. Well, I refused to go out like that and began my quest to put things back to where they once belonged. I hope these tips will give you back your perky butt like it did with me!   Donkey Kicks             While training your legs does improve your butt, there are several exercises that are specifically meant to focus on your backside. Donkey kicks is one of these exercises! Kneel down to all fours and alternately kick out your legs up and behind you. It trains your gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus; the three muscles that make up your buttocks. The first couple of times you perform donkey kicks, you are going to be sore the next day. I’m just warning you now. But this is good news as you are training muscles that have not been worked for quite some time. Your butt is making a comeback!   Glute Bridge             I’ve seen men perform these in the gym and always felt a bit uncomfortable. But once I realized they were training their backside, I got on the floor and joined them. A glute bridge appears almost like a pelvic thrust. You lay down with your back on the floor and your legs bent and then thrust your hips upward and then back down to the floor. Hold the pose at the top of the rep for a few seconds and you will get better results. Repeat it for a few sets and you will get back that butt you had as a teenager.   Kang Squat             You may have never heard of this exercise or even seen it since it is not the most common one. The kang squat is a bodyweight squat with a couple extras thrown into it to give you a better butt. This is a go-to move though for those in the know about how to get their butt looking tight.   Planks             Planks are known for being an exercise that trains your core, but it also works your glutes. If you doubt this, simply watch someone hold the plank for a minute or two. You will be able to see their butt physically tighten up as the time goes on.   No Need for a Special Trip to the Gym             All four of these exercises can be performed in the [...]

4 Tips for Having A Beautiful Wedding on A Budget

Your wedding day will be one of – if not, the – most important and memorable days of your life. Perhaps you’ve been dreaming about it since you were small, or now that you’ve found “The One,” it’s all you have been thinking about. Either way, or something else, now that you’ve decided to get hitched, it is time to plan for the big day. If money were no object, your every wedding wish would be doable. You’d have all details done to perfection…no matter the price tag. It would be television-worthy, and your guests would be wowed. Can you still have such a special affair if you’re on a budget? Of course, it is possible, especially when you spend strategically without feeling like you’ve skimped. I love a good deal as much as a lavish wedding. That’s why these four ideas are the perfect combination for any couple who’d rather save their dough for down the road rather than go broke on the “I dos.”   On-Point Attire             Brides and grooms tend to go overboard on wedding attire. But there is no need for designer dresses and Oscars-style tuxes. There are plenty of options out there that are far less expensive and still look like a million bucks. Seek out samples rather than a brand new item. The discounts are dramatic, and you’ll get the look you’ve been after. Consider wearing family heirlooms (i.e., perhaps your mother’s wedding gown) which not only save money but have an emotional component too. Shop off-season and seek out sales, and think of stores that aren’t necessarily tailored for weddings exclusively. You can find wedding-appropriate attire online, at the mall, or even on Etsy. * You can also rent your wedding dress, tux, and even bridesmaid/groomsmen attire. You’ll be able to choose something outside your budget because the rental fee will be far less than purchasing a new piece to own. See more money-saving rental ideas below. With a little searching, you’ll find something classy that you’ll feel comfortable in. You don’t have to break the bank to be beautiful.   DIY Décor             Couples spend a fortune on invitations, flowers, centerpieces, place cards, take-home gifts, and so on. Things add up in a snap, and before long, you’ve blown your budget…and then some. The crafty types can do projects to prep for the wedding, with their own artistry and personal touches. Get supplies at the store and make it a hands-on experience. It’s a nice way to see how well you work alongside your soon-to-be spouse too. If you’re not particularly talented in this area, check out instructional YouTube videos or find some friends and family members willing to help out. You can work this angle for food too, making your wedding a homemade feast. Prepare large portions at home to heat up at the venue. Make it buffet-style so everyone can sample each DIY dish. [...]

7 Natural Remedies for Bloating Issues

Bloating can not only be uncomfortable but embarrassing too. It can make your clothes ill-fitting, mess up your meal plans, and cause gassiness. It can affect anyone, but it’s often far worse (and far more frequent) for women. The reasons are simply biological. To retain more water during pregnancy and facilitate other functions, women have a much longer colon, which means it runs into more problems during digestion, menstruation, and everything else. It’s a perfect recipe for a bloating problem. However, even though bloating seems inevitable, you can use natural remedies to prevent it from occurring and even reduce the bloating you already have. If you’re a woman whose busy week gets waylaid by digestion and bloating issues, it may seem biologically unfair. But these 7 natural remedies can help even the score.   1.   Probiotics Probiotics encourage your gut to produce healthy bacteria that help you absorb nutrients. They also stop cultures of bad bacteria from forming in your intestines, which is a huge cause of bloating. This means that a plant-based, natural source of probiotics is your best soldier on the frontlines of bloat prevention. Dietary probiotic sources include sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha. You could also go the dairy route and try kefir and Greek yogurt, though your stomach may not take well to dairy in this instance. Stick to the plant-based alternatives.   2.   Hydrate Hydrating can improve your digestion and the speed with which you absorb nutrients. If you know you’ve had excess salt lately or you haven’t been drinking enough, proper hydration can flush you out, reduce face-swelling and bloating, and make you feel better. Try the water warm with a little lemon for extra benefits.   3.   Fennel Fennel is a natural bloat-blaster, even in raw seed form. You can cook with fennel seeds or even eat them raw as a snack, which can help with bloating particularly when it’s caused by cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and brussels sprouts. However, an easy and more palatable choice might be fennel teas, which you can steep yourself or buy in the store.   4.   Cut Back on Coffee I know, I know. Your busy week is a train and coffee is the coal and if the steam runs out, the whole thing grinds to a halt. But caffeinated coffee is not only a mild diuretic, meaning it takes water out of you, but it’s also a gastrointestinal irritant. It has a natural propensity for causing bloating. Since most of us aren’t going to drop coffee cold turkey, one thing you can do besides simply limit your number of cups in the morning is to reduce the additives you use. Less cream and sugar can help reduce the irritation on your bowels.   5.   Ginger Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory that my grandma often sliced up and made us chew to treat an upset stomach. Turns out, she was on to something, since a homemade ginger and lemon tea does wonders for [...]

How to Avoid and Stop Muscle Cramps

If you are already getting hit with muscle cramps during or immediately after a workout, you are walking on the painful wild side. Muscle cramps can end your training quickly and have you crying uncle like a toddler if you are not careful. It does not matter how tough you are! Just ask LeBron James. He had to be carried off the court in the NBA Finals years ago like a wounded soldier because his cramps prevented him from being able to walk. Muscle cramps usually happen because of three reasons: The person is dehydrated, the muscle has been overused, or you have been holding a certain pose too long. More often than not, it has to do with dehydration and a depletion of the minerals your body needs to function properly. Cramps used to be a major problem for me as well. I’d make the trek to the gym only to have my workout cut in half because the tightness and soreness prevented me from going another step on the treadmill or even attempting another strength training set. But after a bit of research, I realized an ounce of prevention can keep the cramps from ever showing up in the first place.   Drink Plenty of Liquid             Coaches always tell athletes to drink water before they are thirsty to stay properly hydrated. Now that I am older and want to avoid cramping up, I fully agree with them! Pick liquids that have plenty of electrolytes such as coconut water and some of the healthier sports drinks if you find you are already cramping up.   Eat Certain Foods             Bananas are really one of the best gifts nature has ever given us! They contain potassium, magnesium, and calcium (all three nutrients relieve muscle cramps). Avocados, watermelon, and Greek yogurt are also good choices. If I am heading out on a run, I will usually have one of these before I venture out and then another one after I finish.   Massage             Around my area, it costs about a dollar a minute for a good massage. This can get expensive rather quickly. But if you want to treat yourself now and then and relieve muscle soreness and cramping at the same time, there is nothing like a massage for those tight and strained muscles.   Take a Hot Shower             A hot and steamy shower can relieve even the most painful cramps. The hot water will feel so good that you won’t want to get out of the shower! Hopefully, you have a tankless water heater that can supply you with an endless amount of hot water without running out. And if you really want to spoil yourself, look for a good shower bench you can sit on while letting the steaming water soothe your cramping muscles.   Stay Flexible       [...]

6 Great Tips on Buying Your First Home

Buying a home for the first time is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. You’ve saved up money, found a place you see yourself living in for years to come, and you’ve made an important investment and commitment to your future. However, buying a home can be a stressful experience – there is so much paperwork, so many things to consider, and, to make a return on your investment, you must commit to living in a single location for a long time. Even in these uncertain times, homeownership is still steady, and if you have the credit and resources to do so, now is a great time to purchase your new home. We want to share 6 tips to make buying your first home as easy as possible.   Know How Much You Need Up Front             Your price range will affect your down payment and loan from the lender (like a bank). You may be looking for a “starter home” for something more affordable and to build up a great line of credit, or you may be looking for a “forever home” that you’ll want to stay at for as long as you can. Knowing what you want out of the house will help you determine how much you’re willing to pay for a home. A down payment is how much money you pay upfront for your house. You can put down as much as you want, but loans will usually require a certain % (based on the price of the house) to be paid as part of the loan. If you have great credit, you may only have to put down 3 – 5% on a home. For example… The house you want is $190,000 3% of $190,000 = $5,7000 You’ll also need closing costs – fees that cover all the paperwork and administration needed to finalize your purchase. These costs are usually around 4% of the loan.   Know Your Options for Assistance             It helps a community when homeownership is increasing, so there are financial assistance programs at the city, state, and national levels to help first-time home buyers. Tax credits and low/no-interest rates are available, so find out what’s available to you.   Stick to the Plan             Before you start working with lenders on applying for loans, you need to understand your budget (which should have been done in #1 above). Once you start working with banks, you may find out that you’re able to afford more than you thought (or be loaned a larger amount). While tempting, this should not change your budget. Remember, you aren’t just buying a house – you are buying a “home.” A “home” includes furniture, paint, and the other little things that turn a shell of a house into a place you are proud to live in. Don’t get greedy and get a larger loan [...]

How to Buy a Beautiful Engagement Ring When You’re on a Budget

Popping the question is nerve-wracking and super exciting at the same time. It’s all about love and commitment, but many think that sealing the deal means mega-watt sparkle. The “bling” is always the focus of Instagram pics, and friends and family can’t wait to see the “rock” radiating from that ring finger. But what if you don’t have tons of dough to get a ring that’s remarkable? The good news is you can buy a beautiful engagement ring without breaking the bank. After all, you’re about to get married, so you can’t start off “forever after” drowning in debt. If you’re watching your wallet and need to be conservative when it comes to choosing a ring, here are some tips to consider before shopping for your special someone. The ring will be gorgeous, you’ll still have money to spare, and your intended recipient will be wowed by your good taste in both jewelry and a mate!   Size Doesn’t Matter             We see celebs flashing their ginormous engagement rings on social media, and while some of them are amazing, others are rather ridiculous. Not only is a giant diamond uncomfortable and unrealistic for most, but it’s difficult to do basic things when the ring gets in the way of everyday tasks. Plus, just because a ring is huge doesn’t mean it’s special necessarily. The gem could be cloudy, and it may go out of style. A better idea is to find something more suitable for your special someone. Splurge on the clarity and cut of the diamond rather than the size. A bright and dazzling diamond – even a small one – is more impressive than a gaudy gem that’s pretentious. With a smaller ring, there’s room to grow. You can add bands for special anniversaries, as stacking is always in style. When you have more money, you can reset the diamond or go up a few carats. Not to mention, smaller rings show class and character. It’s not about the size, but the sentiment. When your proposal is on point, a blinding diamond isn’t even an afterthought.   Think Outside The (Ring) Box             You can do your own thing when it comes to choosing an engagement ring. The typical look is timeless, but your special someone is unique, and their ring should be too. Think about their taste in jewelry and overall appeal. You may not want to take the traditional route, and that means opening doors to finding a ring that’s less expensive, but even more meaningful. While “a diamond is forever,” other glam gems are wonderful alternatives, often far less expensive, but just as breathtaking. Consider an engagement ring featuring your partner’s birthstone or choose one that’s their favorite hue. Emeralds, sapphires, and rubies are rich and vibrant, and their ring will become a focal point on their finger. You may not even want a gem at all. A stylish band [...]

6 Smart Ways to Set Yourself Up for Early Retirement

Did you know the age for retirement is 67 years old? Can you imagine working until you’re 67 years old? Of course, you may have a job you love and want to work at until you physically (or mentally) are not able to. Maybe you just love staying busy, so you see yourself working at a job, any job, for as long as you can. Maybe you just don’t plan that far ahead, so you’re not worried about it. What if you could start habits now that would give you a chance to retire earlier than when you are 67 years old? We’re not talking retire at 64 or 63 – we are talking about retiring when you’re in your 50s, and maybe earlier. The thought of being able to retire early, where you are living comfortably without having to work, is exciting. More important, it is possible, if you start doing these things now.   Think About Your Future Self             People are notoriously bad at planning for retirement. It is difficult to imagine yourself so far into the future because there is so much going on in the present. Before you start doing anything, you must understand that who you are 20 years from now is just the present you x 7,300 days. How many times have you said, “I wish I would have done this earlier?” You need to set your future self up for success, and that means making every decision with that in mind. You don’t need to go too extreme and struggle now just for the sake of it, but you must evaluate how the money you have now is going to help you in the future.   Set Your Goals Now and Work Backwards             After you’ve changed your thinking to keep the “future you” in mind, the next thing is to create a goal for when you want to retire. Once you decide whatever that age is, you can work backward and determine how much you need to be saving to reach that goal.   Start Today with Saving Automatically             Start saving money immediately. Don’t save too much (you still need money to live today) but automate a percentage of your paycheck to go into a savings account. It could be 10%, it could be 20% - whatever you can live without for right now and still live comfortably. Once you automate the process (where it goes into your savings without you having to manually do it), you’ll get used to not relying on that money, and it will teach you to manage the money you have and let the savings build up. This could be done whether you are in a job that has a 401(k) or not.   Contribute the Max to Your 401(k)             If you’re in a job that has a 401(k), [...]

What to Do When Your Partner Becomes “Emotionally Unavailable”

Being in a positive and successful relationship requires compassion, care, and lots of communication. It’s a mix of emotional and physical intimacy that forms and flourishes over time, becoming deeper and more meaningful as the couple grows together. But what happens when the emotional side of things becomes unbalanced, or disappears entirely? If you feel that your partner isn’t holding up their side of the bargain in terms of their emotional availability/stability, it’s time to reassess the relationship and get to the root of the problem. Because without emotional intimacy, the connection is lost.   A Calm Conversation             You’re noticing a change, and it is causing you to panic. What happened to your partner’s emotional side? The shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen to your dreams and doubts have vanished, and you feel like you’re left with a shell of the special someone you once relied on. It’s time to talk. Don’t spring it on them; rather give a heads up that you have been noticing a difference in their mood, behavior, and attitude. Put aside your sadness or frustration and approach the matter with curiosity. Perhaps they are going through something that’s making it hard to be there for you. Find out what’s going on and go from there. Clear your mind of the worst-case scenarios and see what develops. It could be as simple as they’re getting too comfortable with the relationship and they’re forgetting to focus on your needs. A conversation may not be a cure, but it’s a step towards solving the problem. Keep the lines open for further discussion as required. No blame, no bickering.   Ask for What You Need             Your partner isn’t a mind reader. Even if things were once perfect, or close to it, over time, changes come. It’s only natural for a relationship to ebb and flow. If you want your partner to listen more intently, share their perspective more proactively, or just be by your side when you’re in a slump, you need to express your desires clearly. If you expect them to know what to do all the time, you’re only setting yourself up for a letdown. You may need to be specific in terms of instances when you need their emotional side to step up to the plate. If you’re too general, they may not know how to help.   Fizzling Out             Sometimes, when a partner becomes emotionally unavailable, they’re no longer interested in continuing the relationship. This form of distancing is the start of a split. Conversations may become surface-level, they don’t notice your emotions, and they don’t share theirs with you. Rather than cutting ties swiftly, this lack of emotional intimacy can linger until one of you decides that the relationship is no longer healthy. If you’re willing to give it another shot, counseling could help. Seek out a therapist, [...]

Is Walking All the Exercise You Need?

With all the fitness apps out there currently tracking how many steps you walk every day; this leads to an interesting question. While walking is a good low-intensity cardio exercise, is it all the exercise you truly need? I guess it depends on your own personal fitness goals. Most of us start slowly getting back into exercising after a lay off with walking. I was no different. After spending a few years busier with work and Netflix than exercise, I decided to get off the couch and get back into action. I was a walking machine. But I noticed there were a few things missing from my workouts.   Not a Full Body Workout             I was losing weight by walking and watching my diet, but it definitely was gradual. Plus, walking is low-intensity cardio that only really incorporates lower body movement. Sure, you can pump your arms and keep them bent at 90-degree angles as they recommend, but there was no true full-body workout happening through walking. I did end up with some nice and toned legs, but I wanted more.   Walking Is Not a True Strength Training Exercise             As we age, our muscle mass starts to decrease. On average, it shrinks 3 to 8 percent every decade after the age of 30. For many people, it seems to decrease a lot more. Nowadays, people seem to be getting older before their time. It probably has something to do with at least 40 percent of the adult population being clinically obese.   In any case, if you are solely walking, you are not going to retain much of your muscle mass. However, if you include strength training into your exercise routine, you can keep those muscles right where they are. Why is that a good thing? Muscle burns calories even while resting. Furthermore, it keeps your back from showing poor posture, keeps shoulders from sagging, and generally just enables you to lead a higher quality of life.   But, on the Other Hand, Walking Is…             Make no mistake, I am not downplaying what a perfect exercise walking is for most people. After all, it is a way to lose weight without needing much more than a pair of shoes. There is very little chance of getting injured from walking as it is low intensity. Walking also improves a person’s mood and can help with digestion (I sometimes still go for a walk after a meal). And it is a great way to catch up with a friend either on the phone or walking with them in person and burn calories at the same time.   Look at the Goals You Want to Accomplish             It all comes down to what your goals are on whether or not walking is going to be all the exercise you need. If you are interested [...]

How Box Breathing Can Help You Fall Asleep

There have been times in my life when sleep has not come easy. Probably just like you, I have suffered through times of anxiety and sleeplessness where the alarm goes off in the morning and I know for a fact that I never slept more than two hours the entire night. We need a good amount of sleep every night so our bodies and our minds can operate at full function effectively. Sleep is when our bodies repair themselves and our brain is able to clear out harmful toxins that affect our cognitive abilities. Just one night of sleeplessness can cause havoc on our lives for the entire week as you constantly try to play catch up. And if you can’t sleep for days at a time and are a true insomniac, there is nothing pleasant about walking around like a zombie during the daytime hours.   Solutions to Sleeplessness               If you speak to a doctor about your problems with sleeping, they will probably recommend a couple over the counter items or even a prescription drug to help with the issue. I’m not sure about you, but I usually look for an all-natural solution to a problem before I try any medication.   Box Breathing           As you may have never heard of box breathing, there is a possibility that you would recognize it under another name like square breathing. It is the process by which a person will take slow and deep breaths to bring on relaxation. Police officers, medical professionals, educators, and even the military have used box breathing during strenuous moments to relieve stress.   Four Basic Steps to Box Breathing             Box breathing is like a form of meditation and there is nothing difficult about it. If you follow these four simple steps to box breathing, you just might be able to fall asleep quicker every night when incorporating this method into your life.   For a count of four, exhale deeply by eliminating all the air out of your lungs. Now, with all of the air out of your lungs, count to four. Next, inhale only through your nose also for a count of four (seeing a pattern here?). Finally, pause for another four seconds while you hold the air in your legs and your chest swells and expands.   Keep repeating these four steps and soon enough you will not even have to concentrate to achieve this method. It will just become habit over time.   The Research States…           Rather than rely on my sole recommendation to try box breathing when having difficulty sleeping, there is plenty of research that proves it works in enabling better sleep. In fact, a 2015 study conducted by National Yang-Ming University in Taiwan demonstrated that by doing slow breathing exercises for 20 minutes before bed, the people would fall asleep three times [...]

Walking vs. Running: Which Is Better for You?

I must admit, I was never much of a dedicated runner up until a few years back. Even now, I would classify myself as more of a jogger than a full marathon running competitor. Still, I have been on both sides of the fence throughout the years. Is walking better for you than running or does the intensity of running trounce the benefits of walking?   Both Burn Fat             Whether it is running or walking, both will burn calories and fat in the process. Plus, you don’t need anything special for either exercise. Just a pair of running shoes and you are out the door.   Both Produce Healthier Hearts and Stronger Bones             Exercise produces stronger bones and we all definitely need this as we age. Our bone density decreases as we get older and exercise will help prevent this. So, the next time you fall and are able to bounce back up without injury, you can thank your exercise routine.   As far as healthier hearts, a 2013 study that consisted of nearly 50,000 people showed that runners had a 4.5 percent lower chance of having cardiovascular disease than those who did not exercise regularly. However, the walkers in the study who used the same amount of energy daily and burned the same number of calories as the runners had an even lower chance (9 percent less) of having cardiovascular disease than those who were inactive.   Running Burns More Calories             If you are looking for the most bang for your buck, running will have you burning more calories than if you were walking for that same amount of time. The movement and intensity are just higher with running and produce better fat-burning effects. In fact, you will probably burn twice as many calories running for half an hour as you will with walking for half an hour. Still, if you are concerned about burning calories, you can always walk twice as long and balance it all out.   Though Sometimes Low Intensity Is Exactly What You Need             Walking is great for those interested in easing their way back into exercising. Plus, for those that are entering their golden years and have limited mobility, walking is much safer than trying to run down the street or on a bumpy sidewalk.   It is well known that running produces more injuries than walking and this happens for a variety of reasons. Your muscles and tendons could be getting strained, muscle pulls happen more frequently, and it just is more physically demanding so knees and hips can become extra inflamed and sore.   The Bottom Line Is Both Are Benefiting You               Whether you are walking or running for exercise, there are only winners and no losers. The important thing is you are up and moving [...]

5 Tools to Deal with Medical Debt

In 2019, CNBC reported that 137 million Americans were struggling with medical debt. Whether it is due to an unexpected injury, a recurring illness, or simply dealing with healthcare costs as we live longer and experience more problems, medical debt is a common struggle we face as a society. And these numbers don’t include any COVID-19 statistics. With so many people struggling to pay medical bills they either can barely afford or not afford at all, the need for relief and options to handle this challenge can be felt everywhere. We want to share 5 tools to help you deal with medical debt you face so you can work towards a healthy future, both physically and financially.   Make Sure the Charges Are Accurate             Medical practice and billing are important parts of care, but each is managed by humans, and humans can make mistakes. Incorrect medical coding can lead people to be stuck with charges that were either entered by mistake or stuck with charges for services they did not receive at all. Whenever you or a loved one receives medical treatment, you need to ensure you are being billed properly for the services provided. After the care has ended (surgery, hospital stay, etc.) – request an itemized bill detailing a breakdown of every charge with the reason and exact fee. Since so many people are in and out of care every day, medical billing errors can happen. Review every medical bill you receive to make sure it is accurate and contact the medical billing department for that provider (hospital, doctor’s office, etc.) and dispute any incorrect charges. Disputing any incorrect charges can alter your bill either by a small or large amount, but anything will be helpful. If you don’t find any errors, at least you know you what amount you owe and can now focus on paying it off.   Ask for Discounts             Medical billing is notorious for being delayed/backed up due to so many bills being processed at one time, and the medical facilities want to get their bills completed quickly. Ask the provider (don’t say “if” – assume you can get a discount regardless) what kind of discount you can get if you pay everything off within a certain amount of time (like 30 or 45 days). Some providers will offer discounts if you agree to get it paid off quickly (sometimes 10% or more). It never hurts to ask. If you don’t feel comfortable negotiating with the provider, there are professionals you can hire to review your medical bills and negotiate with the provider on your behalf. Keep in mind, this is a service that costs money as well.   Create a Payment Plan             Seeing the amount, you owe as one large number can be overwhelming and stressful. Just like a large project at work or home – don’t think about the [...]
